The tests

The Theory, Hazard Perception and Practical driving Test (including the Show me / Tell me questions). These are the tests that you need to pass to qualify for a driving licence.

The Theory Test pass certificate is proof that you have completed the necessary tests. You need to pass this before booking a practical driving test.

This process has to be completed in strict order. The theory and hazard perception tests have to be passed on the same occasion.

After the pass certificate has been awarded you are then eligible to apply for your practical driving test.

The Show me / Tell me questions form a part of the practical driving test and are asked at the beginning of the practical driving test.

Theory and Hazard Perception Test

The Theory and Hazard Perception Tests are performed on a computer screen in private.

The theory test needs practice before you take it.

At Findley's we recommend to our pupils a set of cd/roms that contain all that you will need to pass both the theory and hazard perception test at the first attempt. Please see the relevant pages for further details.

A lot of people are nervous about taking their Theory Test and Hazard Perception Test. At Findley's Driving School we have done all that we can to alleviate that stress. The recommended cd/rom enables you to practice as much as is necessary before attending the theory test centre.

It is better surely to practice a lot in private and pass the test on the first attempt rather than keep on paying those test fees.

Practical Driving Test

Exchanging the learner plates for either green L-plates or preferably a green P-plate is very much desired.

The practical driving test should not be attempted without first making certain that you are up to standard on all of the required manoeuvres, and that you are a competent and confident driver. I recommend that you have professional tuition before you attempt the driving test.

Professional tuition is always the best method of preparation for the Practical Driving Test. No-one knows better how to teach you to manage the local traffic conditions, junctions and not forgetting of course, those manoeuvres, than an experienced local instructor.

The Show me / Tell me questions are an integral part of the driving test these days and at the beginning of your practical driving test you will be asked two of them. Do not worry about this process unduly. Your instructor will have shown you around their car well in advance and prepared you for this section of the driving test. Expert mechanical knowledge is not required.

You are required to know only the basic checks that sould occur regularly on every motor vehicle anyway, and a few ways of knowing in advance if something is beginning to go wrong with the major systems on your vehicle. I think you will agree that this is going to be very useful knowledge to you afterwards.

An assessment lesson is a very good idea if you have had tuition other than from a professional driving instructor.

Some people are taught by relatives or friends which is legal; but even then I would still recommend at least taking an assessment lesson from a proper driving instructor.

The advice of a professional is worth the cost. The driving test is far too expensive an experience to want to repeat.
