Position on the Road
The way that you use your position on the road can be beneficial to both yourself and others
Intelligent use of road position can help other road users in advance to know where you intend to go. Even if it is too early to indicate.
By positioning early enough you can prevent other vehicles from taking a position alongside you that would inconvenience you & at the same time you are showing the other road users where you intend to go before you get near to the junction.
Position on the road - always important
Your position on the road is important at all times. If you can imagine a set of double yellow lines by the kerb then you should be just outside of those; otherwise try to stay about twelve to eighteen inches from the kerb. This rule is true no matter how wide the road is. On a road with wide lanes the extra space is there for the convenience of other vehicles to overtake you. Not for us to sit in the middle to stop them passing. The other drivers on the road will not drive properly; they follow one another blindly through situations like sheep. Do not join the flock.
Position on the road - useful tool
Your position on the road can be used as a useful tool to tell other road users in advance about your intentions. If you are approaching a major junction and you are told early that you are to turn right; it is a good idea to first check your centre and right mirrors and then change your road position over to the white line. Your mirrors will need to be rechecked before you indicate but the position that you have taken will tell everyone behind where you are going early, therefore helping them.
