Driving in Adverse Weather Conditions

Adverse weather conditions - Bright sunshine

Bright sunshine is not something that we would normally think of a an adverse weather condition

Most people do not think of bright sunshine as a dangerous weather condition. This is exactly the reason that they are more likely to be caught out by it.

Whenever the sun is low in the sky you need to be aware of its position in relation to where you are going. If the sun is on your left and you are turning left then it should not take you by suprise. Lower your sun visor in advance and be prepared.

If the road that you are driving along turns directly into the direction of the sun then you are potentially going to be dazzled by it. This phenomenon is made even worse if the road is angled slightly uphill. You could find yourself in the position effectively of driving straight towards the sun. Not a pleasant job.

If you do find yourself dazzled by sunlight slow down immediately but not severely. The driver behind has probably been affected just as badly as you. The best way to progress is to look along the sides of the road alternately instead of directly ahead. If you combine this with the reduced speed you should have enough observation to see any hazards before they get too close.

If the sun is still dazzling you to the extent that you feel that you cannot proceed safely then pull in and stop until your eyes become accustomed to it. The immediate effect of sun dazzle is the worst.
