Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency

Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency is an Executive Agency of the Department for Transport (DfT).

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency holds all of the information for the millions of drivers and vehicles licensed in the UK.

The Driving Standards Agency (D.S.A) has a website structure whereby links to any page other than the homepage are virtually useless as the homepage is the only one that contains the navigation structure. For this reason alone this is the only link to the D.S.A.

Medical rules.
If you have a medical condition which has become worse since your licence was issued or you develop a new medical condition, you must inform the Drivers Medical Group of your condition, as it may affect your fitness to drive. Failure to do so is a criminal offence and is punishable by a fine of up to £1000.

Driving in other countries.
You may use your GB licence for driving in all other European Community/European Economic Area [EC/EEA] member states. Check with a motoring organisation if you want to drive in a non-EC/EEA country. They will advise you whether you need an International Driving Permit [IDP]. IDPs are issued by the AA, the RAC, RSAC and Green Flag Motoring Assistance Recovery Club. You must be resident in GB, have passed a driving test and be over 18 years of age.

Taxing your vehicle.
A vehicle licence (commonly known as the tax disc) shows that you have paid the necessary vehicle excise duty [VED] for your vehicle. It shows the registration mark (number) and the date up to which you have paid VED. You must display this disc on the left-hand side of the vehicle's windscreen. If the vehicle does not have a windscreen fitted, you will need to display the disc on the nearside of the vehicle (the passenger side).

Unlicensed – Telling DVLA your vehicle is off road (SORN).
If you are the keeper of a vehicle and you do not license it because you do not use it or keep it on a public road, you must tell us as soon as you take the vehicle off the road. Telling us about this is called declaring SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification). This also applies if you have recently purchased a vehicle and the previous keeper has declared SORN. Once you have made a SORN declaration you will be sent an acknowledgement letter within 4 weeks confirming the details.
