Provisional Driving Licence - You must have a provisional driving licence - Provisional Driving Licence
Some people think that they can begin to take driving lessons without a provisional driving licence and then apply for a provisional driving licence as long as they have the provisional driving licence in time for their practical driving test.
I am sorry but nothing could be further from the truth. It is a legal requirement that your driving instructor must check both parts of your provisional driving licence before they may begin to give you your first driving lesson. A provisional driving licence is essential.
Any insurance claim (god forbid that one would arise from a driving lesson) would be invalid if the driving instructor had been teaching a pupil who could not be proven to have held a provisional driving licence at the time. Both instructor and pupil could then be prosecuted both criminally by the crown prosecution service and privately by either the other party or any legal representative acting on their behalf. A provisional driving licence is essential.
No driving instructor will ever risk performing a driving lesson without seeing both parts of a provisional driving licence.

Before you can learn to drive a car, moped or motorcycle you must apply for a provisional driving licence. If you already hold a valid full driving licence and want to learn to drive larger vehicles, minibuses or buses you will need to apply for a provisional driving licence showing provisional licence entitlement for these vehicles.
Normally, for car drivers, the earliest date your provisional driving licence can become valid is your 17th birthday, however you can apply for the provisional driving licence up to three months before your 17th birthday.
So, if you apply for your provisional driving licence before you are 17 you will still have to wait until your birthday before you can take your theory test.
