CAR - Minimum Test Vehicle Requirements for a Practical Test Category B

Cars or vans presented for test must be: -

  1. a four wheeled vehicle;
  2. capable of a speed of at least 100 km/h (62.5mph); and be fitted with: -
    1. a passenger seatbelt;
    2. passenger head restraint; and

It is not a legal requirement that the head restraint be adjustable, but the passenger seat head restraint must be fitted as an integral part of the seat. 'Slip-on' type head restraints are not permissible.

Minimum Vehicle Requirements for attending a practical driving test

The Minimum Vehicle Requirements for attending a practical driving test are hardly unreasonable

The only thing on the minimum vehicle requirements list above that does not come fitted as standard to any reasonably modern car is the interior mirror for the examiners use. A trip to Halfords or any other large motoring shop should secure you one of those with change from ten pounds.

The minimum vehicle requirements are there for a reason

The minimum vehicle requirements that you need to meet when attending for a practical driving test are there for a reason. The reason is road safety. You may have heard quite truthfully that the examiners keep interior mirrors and L-plates at the test centre in case someone arrives who does not meet the minimum vehicle requirements. This may be true at your local test centre or then again it may not. The minimum vehicle requirements are there for you to meet before attending for your practical driving test. The examiners will help out if they can. Do not take them for granted.
