The Highway Code: - As the head of a driving school I always recomend that people read the highway code thoroughly. This is the reason that this Highway Code section was added to the website in 2005. The Highway Code is a valuable resource.

My pupils had several reasons for not reading the highway code. Usually because they had "lost the Highway Code", or "did not have the time for the Highway Code". I was amazed to discover just how many of these pupils did heve the time to use the internet in the evenings though. I added the highway code to the site and "le voila". My pupils now read the highway code as I advise!

Highway Code legal requirements

The Highway Code is not just a useful book. Some of the Highway Code is actually law

The 'Highway Code' is an essential document for all drivers whether they be new or experienced. We strongly recomend that all drivers pay particular attention to this section of the website. The Highway Code.

Many of the rules in the Highway Code are legal requirements, and if you disobey these rules you are committing a criminal offence. You may be fined, given penalty points on your licence or be disqualified from driving. In the most serious cases you may be sent to prison. Such rules are identified in the Highway Code by the use of the words MUST/MUST NOT.

In addition, the rule includes an abbreviated reference to the legislation which creates the offence. An explanation of the abbreviations can be found in the Highway Code here. Abbreviations.

Although failure to comply with the rules of the Highway Code will not, in itself, cause a person to be prosecuted, the Highway Code may be used in evidence in any court proceedings under the Traffic Acts to establish liability.

The Highway Code

The Highway Code knowledge.

Can The Highway Code help us with our responsibilities?

Knowing and applying the rules contained in the Highway Code could significantly reduce road accident casualties. Cutting the number of deaths and injuries that occur on our roads every day is a responsibility that we all share. The Highway Code can help us all to discharge that responsibility.

We all have a vested interest in making the roads a safer place to be. Even when we are driving ourselves we have friends and family who may well be walking. Knowing the Highway Code helps to keep them safe. Even in cars we know that we are not necessarily safe from the actions of an idiot. Having a thorough understanding of the knowledge in the highway code can help us to understand our responsibilities.

If each of us as individuals not only reads the highway code but takes in and accepts the wisdom from the highway code then everyone is safer. The Highway Code helps us all.

The Highway Code Updated

The Highway Code is updated but thankfully not very often

The Highway Code is updated as required. Thankfully it is not very often that the highway code is updated. The highway code is being updated as I write in 2006. There has been a 'highway code consultation period' which has now closed where any interested parties could make suggestions for changes to the highway code. Any suggested changes to the highway code have been received and are currently being sorted through and considered. There are expected to be both new sections for the highway code as well as ammendments to some existing highway code sections. The release date for the new Highway Code is sometime around 2007/2008. They will not rush the new Highway Code. It is too important!

As soon as the new version of the official highway code is released I will update my own online copy to reflect the changes.
