Normal Drive Position

This is the normal position for your car on the road

The edge of the road is determined by the position of the kerb stones and is supplemented by the use of road markings. There will be times when you are not near to the kerb because you are in a different lane or with certain junction markings.

Position on a single carriageway road

The normal drive position for a car on the road should be approximately twelve to eighteen inches from the edge of the road.

There are two simple ways of maintaining this:

  1. If you can see drain covers at the side of the road, make sure that yur wheels are outside of the drain covers as you drive along.
  2. If there are double yellow lines by the kerb, or if you can imagine them, then drive with your tyres just outside of the nearest yellow line.

Position in a lane other than by the edge of the road

When in any lane other than the one on the left your position should be maintained in the middle of the chosen lane so that you are no nearer to the traffic on either side.
