Which is best, an independent driving instructor or a large driving school?

There are of course advantages and disadvantages to both the independent instructor and the large driving school.

With no particular axe to gring in either direction I can at least explain to you the advantages and pitfalls of both and detail what we have done to get the best tuition for you.

The large driving school

Advantages - With one of the larger driving schools you are more likely to be able to book lessons with one of their instructors. Their cars are always going to be new. You may take satisfaction from knowing that you are with a well known name.

Disadvantages - If I were a poor instructor who could not get work myself because of a bad reputation I would join one of the largest schools and hide under their well known name. Unless you have booked a particular named instructor on the basis of a recommendation then you have not got a clue what you are getting. By insisting that all of their instructors use exactly the same cars they are ensuring a steady supply of disgruntled instructors. Do you want to be taught by an instructor who does not want to be in the vehicle? In most cases there is no real additional support available to you at all.

The independent instructor

Advantages - This instructor lives by their own ability. The indpendents who do not have a good reputation do not get a full book of work. They are completely at one with their vehicle because they chose it for the job.

Disadvantages - You may be learning in the old family car, not ideal. Unless you have booked them on the basis of a recommendation then you have not got a clue what you are getting. In most cases there is no real additional support available at all.

Replacing vehicles every six to twelve months as advertised by a lot of 'big name' driving schools costs an awful lot of money which has to be added to your lesson fees. The instructor - This is a family run school. Instructors are interviewed personally by myself, not just taken on after a quick word over the telephone to make sure that they are available to start. You will have an instructor who is operating within the framework of a successful business. Successful for our customers as well as for us. Check around in the yellow pages. We are not the most expensive. Ask the others if they provide the things that we do. Your instructor can replace you easily when you pass so there is no pressure for them to get you to do 'just a few more lessons' than you may need to.
