Do you really need to see my provisional driving licence on my first driving lesson?
We do need to see both parts of your provisional driving licence on your first driving lesson.
This seems to surprise some pupils. Please let me assure you that if you attend your first driving lesson without your provisional driving licence your instructor will ask you to fetch it for them to see.
This is not a rule that we have made up ourselves. I am afraid that checking the details on a pupils provisional driving licence is a legal requirement. As you would expect, our vehicles carry the correct insurance for teaching people to drive. It is a requirement of that insurance cover that we only teach valid provisional licence holders. If an instructor were to carry out a first lesson without first having checked the pupils entitlement to drive then they would be working without insurance.
