Environmental section

Environmental concerns are everyones' business

All motor vehicles no matter how well they are manufactured have an effect upon the environment

That effect goes well beyond exhaust emissions and noise

The air that we breathe should not be polluted unnecessarily.

The manufacturers are under constant pressure from customers and regulatory bodies to make improvements in the areas of fuel efficiency, exhaust emissions and noise levels.

My aim with this section of the site is to take a look at all aspects of environmentalism as it applies to both the motor industry and us, the consumers of their products.

Some of the content of this section may suprise you. That is not a bad thing. We should know the effects of our choices. How else are we to make informed decisions?

More pollution is created during the useful life of a vehicle than during its manufacture.

As individual car owners we too can have an effect upon the environment. I do understand when people say that one person can make no noticeable difference and, on their own, they are right. On the other hand it took millions of us many years to pollute the planet to the extent that we have done.

It is about time that more of us decided to be part of the solution. Or at least minimize the extent to which we are a part of the problem. There are several decisions which we make that have a bearing.

Recycling of vehicles is becoming more widespread and more efficient.

These days many manufacturers of motor vehicles are claiming to be more environmentally friendly in the way that they build their products. Manufacturing the cars to be recycleable afterwards also seems to be a priority. I aim to take a look at this.

The individual motor vehicle consumes many times more energy in its useful lifetime than it originally took to build!

Is recycling efficient? Are hybrids or alternative fuels the answer? Should we wait for electric cars charged from a sustainably generated distribution grid?

tyres can be recycled into many products. Much better than when they used to be just dumped or worse, burned.

The articles in this section may provide differing answers to these and other questions. The articles are here to inform you so that you can make your own mind up where the future lies. It is you that will have to choose which technology to buy after all.

All of the articles currently available in the environmental section below are guest articles. Even though I am interested, as I am sure you all are, in protecting the environment; I find it necessary to leave the writing of the articles to others. My own knowledge is sadly, not sufficient. The originating authors are credited of course. This section is in its infancy and will be expanded over time.

What is a hybrid car?

Hybrid cars are so called because they run on a combination of two different power sources. The first is a normal but usually highly fuel efficient gas engine designed to get the maximum amount of power and mileage from the minimum amount of fuel.

Lithium batteries, the way forward for hybrid cars?

At the moment almost all hybrid cars use a combination of a gas or diesel engine and an electric motor. The energy for most of these motors is generated from the hybrid cars engine and stored in the batteries.

Hybrid cars, transport for the future?

Electric cars would of course be the ultimate in reducing emissions, aside from those produced in the generation of the electricity used to power them. But all attempts to produce a viable electric car have produced nothing that would be useable and practical to the average driver.

Hybrid cars, do the figures add up?

They are very fashionable among the young professional classes at the moment, and a great way of displaying your green credentials to the world.

Facts you need to know about hybrid cars

The hybrid is a car that has both an electric and a gas motor to run it. But, unlike electric cars of yesteryear, the hybrid will recharge itself, hence no need to plug it into an outlet.

Alternatives to hybrid cars

They are fuel-efficient and produce a great deal less emissions than their conventionally powered counterparts. At the present they are gaining greatly in popularity due to a variety of factors.
