Pass Plus - Lesson three
Out of town and rural roads
This lesson takes place on semi-rural and rural roads depending upon what is available in your area
The countryside presents us with an ever changing and in some ways
more demanding driving environment
You don't think so?
The roads can change width and direction at any moment, the road surface can change in quality without apparent reason, there are less signs to warn of hazardous situations and there may not be a footpath; which of course means that any pedestrians should be on your side of the road walking towards you.
Hopefully I have gone some way to changing your mind.
Far too many drivers who normally drive in towns seem to see a drive in the country as an opportunity for 'fun' behind the wheel. I would call it dangerous driving. people who live in the countryside I am sure have far stronger discriptions.
If driving in the countryside still does not sound like a fair challenge then add the fact that it may be possible to overtake, but be careful, on those single carriageway roads. If you are not careful you will still be on the same side of the road as the oncoming traffic when they wish to use it.
Forward planning
Forward planning is a very useful skill indeed when driving in the country. Always look well ahead and be prepared to slow down in advance.
In my own opinion forward planning is the most important skill that is taught. Without this ability driving is lowered to a patchwork of reacting to risks and guesswork. Both of which can be avoided by forward planning.
In this hour we will cover
